About Morehead: Morehead is a city of Rowan County, Kentucky,
United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2000 census. The city is named
for Gov. James T. Morehead. Most of Rowan county now has the ZIP code 40351 or
40313. It is the county seat of Rowan County. Morehead State University is
located here.
About Cave Run Lake: The lake is located within the scenic
Eastern Highlands Region of Kentucky and is almost completely surrounded by the
northern-most section of the Daniel Boone National Forest. An earth and
rock-fill dam built across the Licking River created Cave Run Lake. The dam is
located near the small community of Farmers, Ky., 10 miles west of Morehead and
60 miles east of Lexington.
The 8,270 acre Cave Run Lake is most widely known for its outdoor recreation
opportunities, excellent fishing and scenic beauty. However, the lake project
was constructed primarily for the purpose of reducing flood damage. The Corps of
Engineers operates and maintains the dam and three day-use recreation areas near
the dam. The remaining recreation areas are under the jurisdiction of the
Cumberland District of the U.S. Forest Service.
About Morehead State University: Morehead State University is a
public, co-educational university located in Morehead, Kentucky in the foothills
of the Daniel Boone National Forest in Rowan County, midway between Lexington,
Kentucky and Huntington, West Virginia. The 2005 and 2006 editions of "America's
Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report named MSU one of the top 25 public
universities in the South. MSU has also become one of only four universities in
the U.S. to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in space science.
Morehead State University was originally founded as a private teacher's college
in 1887, The Morehead Normal School. It is said to have been comprised of 13
buildings with a layout in the shape of a crescent moon for some period prior to
1922. It didn't become a public institution until 1922, and by 1966 it had
reached university status. MSU has more than 9,000 students from 100 Kentucky
counties, 42 states and 37 nations. They are enrolled on campus, at extended
campus centers in Ashland, Jackson, Prestonsburg and West Liberty and several
